Ascoglossum (Reichb. f.) Schlechter
in Fedde Repert. Beih. 1(1913), 974.
Introduction: Only two species are known in this genus. These showy, monopodial epiphytes are allied to Renanthera Lour. and Ascocentrum Schltr.
Derivation of genus name: Greek asco (bag) glossa (tongue).
Type species: Saccolabium calopterum Rchb. f.
Characteristics of genus: Medium sized to very large monopodial epiphytes from the trpical lowlands. The leaves are aranged on the pseudobulbs in two rows and these are quite fleshy, leathery and relatively narrow. The plants are often held in place only by their long aerial roots. The lateral inflorescences may arise anywhere near the upper part of the pseudobulb. The inflorescenses can be branching, bearing large numbers of small, intensily red to purple coloured flowers.
Number of species in New Guinea: 1
Species shown here: Ascoglossum calopterum
Photos: Ascoglossum calopterum
Habitat: A. calopterum (Reichb. f.) Schltr. can be found in the canopy layer branches of large trees from sea level to about 600 m. It is quite rare and not easily detected. The deep purple flowers of this species are most attractive.
Conservation status: This species is only found in isolated pockets in some coastal rainforests and needs protection.
