ORCHID GENUS DESCRIPTION
Chilopogon Schlechter
in Fedde Repert. Beihefte 1:332 (1914)
Introduction: A genus established by Schlechter, separating only three known species from the genus Appendicula Bl. for its distinct difference in the structure of the anther, shape of the labellum and the presence of six pollinia.
Derivation of genus name: Greek cheilos (lip), pogon (beard)
Type species: Chilopogon distichum (Ridl.) Schltr.
Basionym: Appendicula disticha Ridley
Number of species in New Guinea: Schlechter described C. distichum, C. oxysepalum and C. bracteatum as well as two varieties which need more clarification.
