ORCHID GENUS DESCRIPTION

Introduction: Only two species are known in this genus, one from Malaya and the other from New Guinea, namely C. papuana Schltr. They are semi-terrestrial or epiphytic orchids of the subtribe Thuniinae Rchb.f.

Derivation of genus name: Greek klados (a branch), erion (wool). Refers to the plant's epiphytic habit

Type species: C. viridiflora J.D. Hooker

Characteristics of genus: The plants produce erect leafy shoots at long intervals from a creeping rhizome, and bear medium-sized green flowers on slender inflorescences.

Number of species in New Guinea: 1

Habitat: The plant needs to grow near the base of tree or shrub where it forms stolons which climb up the stems and often reach a height of 1.5 m.
