ORCHID GENUS DESCRIPTION
Codonosiphon Schlechter

Introduction: Only three epiphytic species from the high montane forests are known in this genus established by Schlechter in 1905. Related to Bulbophyllum Thou. and Tapeinoglossum Schltr. One species occurs in Celebes and the other two in New Guinea were described by Schlechter as C. campanulatum and C. papuanum.
Derivation of genus name: Greek kodon (bell), siphon (tube). Refers to the sepals which are partly connate forming a campanulate tube
Type species: C. codonanthum (Schltr.)Schltr. This species is indigeneous to the Celebes and does not occur in New Guinea
Characteristics of the genus: Small plants with pseudobulbs not exceeding 2.5 cm and leaves from 7.5 - 13.0 cm in length the latter mentioned species has dark carmine red flowers.
