ORCHID GENUS DESCRIPTION
Dactylorhynchus Schlechter
in Fedde, Repert. Beih. 1 (1913), 890
Introduction: Closely allied to the genus Bulbophyllum Thouars. this genus with only one epiphytic species was named by Schlechter. The species is D. flavescens and was found by him in September 1909 in the Torricelli range at an altitude of some 900 m.
Derivation of genus name: Greek dactylos (finger), rhynchos (snout). Referring to the finger-like rostellum
Type species: D. flavescens Schltr.
Characteristics of the genus: Schlechter separated this genus from Bulbophyllum as the column structure was significantly different in the species found. The flowers of this small plant are pale yellow.
