ORCHID GENUS DESCRIPTION
Dendrochilum Blume

Introduction: Some hundred and fifty species are known from S.E. Asia to New Guinea. The genus is also incorrectly known as Platyclinis Ridl.
Derivation of genus name: Carl Blume described the genus in 1825 from the Greek words dendron (tree) and cheilos (lip)
Type species: Dendrochilum aurantiacum Blume
Characteristics of the genus: These epiphytic or lithophytic plants are often very handsome. The flowers are mostly very small but are produced in considerable numbers in long, dense, often distinctly two-ranked, gracefully arching or rigidly erect racemes.
Habitat: Found in rainforests from sea level to high montane mist forests
Conservation status: not threatened
