ORCHID GENUS DESCRIPTION
Geodorum G. Jackson

Introduction:About ten species are known from mainly Africa and Madagascar, South-East Asia, Philippines, Indonesia, New Guinea, Australia and one species recorded for Solomon Islands. The genus belongs to the Eulophia alliance in the subribe Cyrtopodiinae.
Derivation of genus name: The genus was created by George Jackson in 1811 in reference to the terrestrial habit of the genus, from the Greek geo = earth and doron = gift.
Type species: Geodorum citrinum Jackson
Characteristics of the genus: Deciduous terrestrial herbs with short stems, forming almost round, subterranean crowded clusters of fleshy pseudobulbs. The inflorescence is nodding when in flower, straightening prior to seed dispersal. Flowers that do not open widely.
