Derivation of genus name:Greek glossa(a tongue), rhynchos (snout) Referring to the large tongue-shaped rostellum
Type species: Glossorhyncha amboinensis Ridley
Characteristics of the genus: The plants can form dense spreading masses. The stems can be erect or pendulous, usually slender and branched. The terminal inflorescence carries one flower, mostly white with yellowish tips to the sepals and petals. Flowers can be fragrant.
