ORCHID GENUS DESCRIPTION
Kuhlhasseltia J.J. Smith
in Icon. Bogor. 4(1910),1.
Introduction: Only four species are recorded for this terrestrial genus, distributed from Malaya, Indonesia and Borneo to New Guinea. Very little is known about this genus and it is assumed that the ecology is similar to that of Goodyera.
Derivation of genus name: In honor of two Dutch Botanists - H.Kuhl and J.C. van Hasselt.
Type species of genus: Kuhlhasseltia javanica J.J.Smith
Characteristics of genus: Plants are small with creeping rhizomes which produce an erect stem bearing a terminal inflorescence.
Number of species in New Guinea: One species in Irian Jaya.
Conservation status: not known
