ORCHID GENUS DESCRIPTION
Luisia Gaudichaud

Introduction: Some forty species are distributed from tropical Asia to the Pacific Islands.
Derivation of genus name: Charles Gaudichaud-Beaupré created this genus in honour of Don Luis de Torres, a Portuguese botanist of the 19th century.
Type species: Luisia teretefolia Gaud.
Characteristics of genus: Epiphytic, often climbing, monopodial plants with occasionally branched, leafy stems. The leaves are distichous, stiff, terete; inflorescence is lateral, sessile with one small flower opening at a time, lasting several days.

Habitat: Species can be found in the lowland forests where there is plenty of light.
Conservation status: not threatened
