ORCHID GENUS DESCRIPTION
Microtatorchis Schlechter
in K.Schumann & Lauterbach, Nachtr. Fl. deutsch. Schutz. Sudsee (1905), 224.
Introduction: A genus of epiphytic herbs with its center of distribution in New Guinea.
Derivation of genus name: Greek mikros (small) and orchis (orchid). In suggestion of the minute habit.
Type species: Microtatorchis perpurilla Schltr.
Characteristics of genus: Minute monopodial epiphytes with green roots and very short stems. Some of the species are leafless, superficially similar to Taeniophyllum.
Habitat: Found only in the high altitude mist forests
