Introduction: A genus containing only two or three species closely related to Bulbophyllum.
Derivation of genus name: Greek monos (single). New Latin sepalum (sepal). In allusion to the connate condition of the sepals which are joined nearly to the apex.
Type species: Monosepalum dischorense Schltr. Monosepalum dischorense
Characteristics of genus: Vegetatively these plants resemble the species in the genus Bulbophyllum, single leaves connected by short or long rhizomes.
Number of species in New Guinea: Very few species in New Guinea, some known ones are M. dischorense, M. muricatum and M. torricellense.
