Introduction: The perhaps thirty species in this small genus are distributed in Africa and Madagascar, Asia, New Guinea, Vanuatu, the Mariana Islands, Fiji, Tonga, Niue and one species recorded from Australia. The genus is closely related to Eulophia and thirty one species previously included in that genus have been reallocated to the genus Oeceoclades by Garay and Taylor in 1976.
Derivation of genus name: Greek oikeios (private) and klados (branch) Referring possibly to the separation of certain species from Angraecum by John Lindley, to form a distinct tribe.
Type species: Angraecum maculatum Lindley.
Characteristics of genus: Terrestrial herbs with short, slender pseudobulbs. The 1-3 terminal leaves are either plicate or conduplicate. The erect, lateral inflorescence arises from the base of the pseudobulb and is many-flowered. The flowers are green to br
wn. Some species are deciduous and others evergreen.
