ORCHID GENUS DESCRIPTION
Oxyanthera A.T. Brongniart

Introduction: Allied to the genus Thelasis Blume the establishment of this genus has been a matter of controversy for some time. Smith and Clements treat Oxyanthera as a synonym of Thelasis.
Derivation of genus name: From the Greek words oxys = sharp and anthera = anther reflecting the pointed anther in the type species
Type species: Oxyanthera micrantha Brongniart
Characteristics of genus: Small, epiphytic herbs, the flowers of which are often cleistogamic. The flowers are yellow-green, yellow with white tips or brownish flesh-coloured.
Number of species in New Guinea: Schlechter recorded two species in the genus: O. papuana and O. abbreviata.
Habitat: Found from sea level to about 800 m.
Conservation status: not known
