ORCHID GENUS DESCRIPTION
Papuaea R. Schlechter
in Fedde, Repert. 16 (1919), 105.
INTRODUCTION: There is only one species in this genus from New Guinea, somewhat allied to Moerenhoutia Blume from which it differs in technical details of the small flowers.
DERIVATION OF GENUS NAME: Schlechter coined the name from Papua, the southern part of Papua New Guinea where the type specimen was collected.
TYPE SPECIES: Papuaea reticulata Schlechter.
CHARACTERISTICS OF GENUS: An evergreen terrestrial herb, exceedingly rare, which vegetatively reminded him of the genus Macodes Blume. Schlechter found the dark-green leaves with white or yellow venation of the species highly attractive.
