ORCHID GENUS DESCRIPTION
Pedilochilus Schlechter
in K. Schumann & Lauterbach, Nachtr. Fl. deutsch. Schutzgebiete Südsee (1905), 218.
INTRODUCTION: The genus of fifteen species from New Guinea and neighbouring islands. The genus is closely related to Bulbophyllum.
DERIVATION OF GENUS NAME: Greek pedilon (shoe; slipper), cheilos (lip). In reference to the slipper-shaped lip.
TYPE SPECIES: Pedilochilus papuanum Schltr.
CHARACTERISTICS OF GENUS: Small epiphytic herbs vegetatively resemble those in the genus Bulbophyllum. Single leaves arise from the bulbous pseudobulbs and the inflorescence which carries a single flower arises from the base of the pseudo-bulb. Plants in flower are easily recognised by their pouched lip, superficially similar to the lip of Paphiopedilum species. Of two species found by the authors, one at the Tari Gap had flowers as large as the leaves and coloured maroon with white venation another found at the Akuti Divide had bright yellow sepals and petals with a white lip.
HABITAT: Found in the montane mist forests growing on moss at altitudes above 1800 m.
CONSERVATION STATUS: not known
