ORCHID GENUS DESCRIPTION

INTRODUCTION: A genus of only two species distributed from Malaysia, Borneo, Java and the Philippines to New Guinea and the Solomon Islands.
DERIVATION OF GENUS NAME: Greek pilos (felt), phyllon (leaf). Descriptive of the felt-like hairy covering of the leaves.
TYPE SPECIES: Pilophyllum villosum (Blume) Schltr.

CHARACTERISTICS OF GENUS: Rather large terrestrials with above ground pseudobulbs bearing a single hairy leaf. The inflorescence is borne on rudimentary pseudobulbs in between the leafy ones and are many-flowered.
NUMBER OF SPECIES IN NEW GUINEA: Only one species known so far.
HABITAT:Plants can be found in dense forests growing in rich humus soil at altitudes from 600 to 1000 m.
