ORCHID GENUS DESCRIPTION

INTRODUCTION: About nineteen species are known in this genus of very unusual orchids of the subtribe Dendrobinae. The genus is distributed from the Moluccas through New Guinea to Samoa and Fiji and has its center of distribution in New Guinea.

DERIVATION OF GENUS NAME: Greek pseudes (false), eria ( a genus of orchids). A false Eria.

TYPE SPECIES: Pseuderia foliosa (Brogn.) Schltr. Basionym: Dendrobium folosium Brongniart

CHARACTERISTICS OF GENUS: Epiphytic herbs from the rain forests with usually small and insignificantly coloured flowers.

NUMBER OF SPECIES IN NEW GUINEA: P. similis Schltr., P. frutex Schltr., P. pauciflora Schltr., P. floribunda Schltr., P. wariana Schltr., P. trachychila (Krzl) Schltr.
