ORCHID GENUS DESCRIPTION

INTRODUCTION: The approximate 20 species in this genus are distributed throughout tropical south east Asia, the island of New Guinea and northern Australia.

DERIVATION OF GENUS NAME:

TYPE SPECIES: Thelasis carinata (Blume)

CHARACTERISTICS OF GENUS: The character of this genus are the subtubular flowers without a mentum in conjunction with the pollinarium, the column without a foot and the labellum being broadest near the base.

HABITAT: tropical rainforests

CONSERVATION STATUS: not threatened
