ORCHID GENUS DESCRIPTION
Vandopsis Pfitzer

INTRODUCTION: This genus is represented by some eight to twelve species which are distributed from S.E. Asia, southern China, the Philippines and New Guinea.
DERIVATION OF GENUS NAME: This genus of some eight to twelve species was created by E. Pfitzer in 1889. The genus is allied to Arachnis and Trichoglottis. The genus name refers to the resemblance to the genus Vanda.
TYPE SPECIES: Fieldia lissochiloides Gaud.
CHARACTERISTICS OF GENUS: Often large, erect monopodial epiphytes or lithophytes with usually very fleshy, strap-shaped leaves. The lateral inflorescence carries many large, fleshy and often showy flowers.
NUMBER OF SPECIES IN NEW GUINEA: 2
HABITAT: In the open savannahs and lowland forests of Papua New Guinea V. warocqueana (now Sarcanthopsis nagarensis) is quite common.
