Greetings everyone! I would like to get your opinion and any information on a Phalaenopsis orchid that has appeared in the local markets for Mother's Day. This Phalaenopsis is a rare blue color which I have never seen or heard of before, see my attachement, and I woul like to know if this is a new hybrid or how can they produce this strain of Phalaenopsis. Aparently they are selling quite rapidly in the markets, Home Depots, Lowe's, etc. Thank you in advance for your response.

Hi All, I was just wondering if there is any place in the world I could find v. leucostele, stangeana, petersiana, javieriae and celebica? So appealing as wild orchids are, it is difficult also to distinguish the hybrids from the wild! Mr O'Byrne, how many years have you been naming orchids for? And Mr Handoyo, is it alright for me to have your email address please? I have some rare species to ask you for identification as well. Thanks. |

Hi Vincent. It is impossible to identify your Jewel Orchid without dissecting a flower. It is impossible to even place it in a genus just from a photo of the leaves. The best I can do on totally insufficient information is to state that it belongs in the subtribe Goodyerinae. Peter |

Hello Mr. Peter.... Do you know the name of this orchid? I got it from my friend, he told me that it came from Borneo (Kalimantan). The size of leaf is 4x2 cm. |

Hi Vincent, and everyone. Much of the information you request is already freely available. Try visiting the National Herbarium Nederland website. One huge difference between this website and other orchid sites is that this one is authoritative. It has the experts from a world-renowned botanical institution behind it. Main page is at: http://www.nationaalherbarium.nl/pubs/orchidweb/ The first two links on this page are the original ones ... selling NHN orchid publications. The bottom two links are where the treasure lies. The last link takes you to a page that is being developed as an illustrated checklist of the orchids of Laos: http://www.orchisasia.org/orchids%20list.html While this might not sound tremendously relevant, anyone who has bought unidentified plants from Vietnam should check this site. Not only is there a high degree of overlap between Vietnamese orchids and Lao orchids, but many of the plants you buy as "Vietnamese origin" were actually collected in Laos. There is also considerable overlap between Laos and it's other neighbours, so you might find your unidentified Thai or Chinese species here. The third link on the main page (Malesian Orchid Genera Illustrated) takes you to the place where serious development will occur in the future: http://www.nationaalherbarium.nl/pubs/orchidweb/Malesian%20orchid%20genera.htm At the moment this site is just highly useful. The NHN staff (mainly Andre Schuiteman) intend to expand it until it becomes a one-stop on-line repository of just about everything that you could possibly want to know about orchids from the Malesian region, ie Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, East Timor, New Guinea and Philippines. Before you dive into the genus-by genus illustrated guide, try clicking on the map of the area. OGD members are constantly asking what books exist for on a certain area .... well, here is a complete, region-by-region listing. If you've got a S.E.Asian species, but are not certain what genus it belongs in, try clicking on the "synoptical key" button, and it may give you an answer. And look at those genus names ... there are no Rhytionanthos or Tetrabaculum species here .... just Bulbophyllum and Dendrobium .... names as they ought to be. Have a good browse, and remember to bookmark it ... this site is going places. Cheers, |

Dear Mr. Peter, Thank you for your valuable information, finally I can see the picture of Habenaria rumphii. Actually I never visit Madura to find orchids growing there, but my friends said that there were so many Vanda limbata growing on roadside trees. My friend offers me Papilionanthe tricuspidata, said that the orchid is not easy to be found and only can be found in Nusa Tenggara (Alor Island), endemic, is that right Mr. Peter? |

Hi Vincent. Habenaria rumphii is a widespread grassland terrerstrial that is distributed across much of S.E.Asia, from Indochina to Australia. It is more common in non-monsoonal regions simply because that is where you find permanent grasslands. I have no information on the distribution inside Java, but my understanding is that Madura is drier than most of Java. This means grasslands should be more common, in which case I would expect H. rumphii to be found there. Dendrobium rumphianum is indeed a synonym of D. bicaudatum. |

Dear Mr. Peter, I need information and picture of Habenaria rumphii. Can you help me? The information about that species is very poor. In "Orchids of Java" by JB Comber there is no picture about H.rumphii. In East Java the distribution is in Madura Island, is that true? My last question, is Dend rumphianum and Dend bicaudatum same species (synonyms)? I have one plant of that species, it looks like Dend. antennatum but the color is brownish. Thank you very much |
