I have changed the URL for my images of the orchids of Papua New Guinea. There are now 1,838 images, mostly of orchids, but some other ones as well. The URL is: http://gallery.orchidspng.com/ The site navigation is now available in 28 languages, from Arabic to Turkish. Your browser will detect the intalled language or you can change it manually. You can also chose from 10 different themes if you don't like the default theme used. Jose, thanks for the list of sites. I would like to add this site: http://www.pestnet.org/ as that's where I found good advice on how to deal with the Dendrobium beetle. the site is more orientated to the pest problems of the Pacific and South East Asia region: PestNet is an email network that helps people in the Pacific and South East Asia obtain rapid advice and information on plant protection, including quarantine. It links the Pacific and South East Asian regions with plant protection specialists worldwide and is free to members. |

As an enthusiast of mainly Bulbophyllum and Dendrobium species, my favourite sites are: PNG Orchid News (of course) http://www.orchidspng.com and Haru's Bulbophyllum and Cirrhopetalum photo Page http://www.edit.ne.jp/~kohsaka/h_html/haru1100.htm Another site for general interest is Species Orchid information and photo index http://www.orchidsonline.com.au/photo.html Cheers...Steve |

I would say, www.orchidmall.com. I didn't know much abour Orchidwire, and I find the geographical listing of the vendor useful. I often do not remember the name of a nursery, but remember where it is from. If there is an option to choose alphabetical oder, that would be helpful, too. Hideka |

Thanks for the kind words Wolfgang! I appreciate it. This is my first post here on this new and promising discussion forum, so I thought I would share some random opinions on exploring and creating orchid web sites: Designing and maintaining OrchidWire requires that I visit a lot of orchid web sites (usually several dozen everyday). And although I only (unfortunately) understand English, I also enjoy exploring orchid sites in other other languages. For this I use the free translation "Babel Fish" by AltaVista: http://babelfish.altavista.com/ Choose the languages, enter the URL, and Babel Fish takes care of the rest. It is not perfect by any means, and does not cover all languages, but if it were not for Babel Fish (and of course, the near-universal use of Latin names) OrchidWire would not be as globally useful as it is today. Google also has a good translation service at: http://www.google.com/language_tools but Google doesn't currently have, for example, translation from Japanese to English. I wanted to mention translation services because sometimes I think native English speakers do not bother with sites that are not written in English. And there are tons of great orchid stuff out there on non-English sites! About creating orchid sites... especially for those who are contemplating taking on the project of creating an orchid web site. Please keep the purpose of your site clear and tightly-focused. Too often, in my opinion, I see sites that have a bit of everything (even remotely orchid-related) thrown into the soup. However, what really excites me, and I believe others, are sites that focus in on a particular orchid topic. For example, a particular genus: http://www.pleione.info/ http://www.phragweb.info/ http://www.phals.net/ http://perso.wanadoo.fr/bernard.lagrelle/ http://www.neofinetia.com/ or geographical area: http://www.orchidspng.com/ (naturally!) http://perso.wanadoo.fr/liliane.pessotto/ http://www.orhidee.ee/ http://www.gpa.si/orhideje/ http://www.raysweb.net/orchids/index.html or related-activity such as photography: http://www.edit.ne.jp/~fkoichi/ http://www.erichunt.com/orchids/photos.html http://www.geocities.com/vt_orchid/ http://www.orchidworks.com/ http://perso.wanadoo.fr/dd.fernandez/index.htm or even a particular cultivation method: http://www.vision.net.au/~nicvdb/ Okay, I probably used up more than my fair share of links by now... Keep your new site focused, if possible get your own domain name (prevents links from breaking when you change hosts), and try to avoid hosting anywhere that employs pop-up/down advertisements. Hopefully the above is not perceived as a lecture, or a fast summary of my favorite sites, but only for what it is... my biased opinions. And if you do create a new orchid site, or know of one that we have missed, please let us know: http://www.orchidwire.com/suggest.html I'm very curious to hear what others have to say in this thread. |

I am starting this new thread and ask members to contribute. There are many orchid web sites out there but a very few stand 'head and shoulders' above the rest. One of those, in my opinion is: Wendell Kozak's http://www.orchidwire.com/ Orchid Resource Directory. Be sure to visit that site! |
