Papua New Guinea Orchid News Image Gallery updated! Courtesy of Dr. Ed de Vogel I have been able to update the image gallery of Papua New Guinea Orchid News. Images updated are from collections made in 2003, exported with complete CITES documentation to the Netherlands, and grown at the Hortus of Leiden University, from pants that have eventually flowered. Some 2,000 images have been added so far with another 3,000 or so to go. Preparing the images for the web takes time, uploading takes forever and adding the descriptions to each and every image is another story but over time I will have them all named. The total count of images stands at over 4,900 as of to date. Eventually this will become the largest image library of PNG orchids. To visit please click this link: http://gallery.orchidspng.com You may know that this is all part of the Flora Malesiana project started many years ago. To date 4 CDs have been published and there are 3 more to go. Additionally a 'coffee table' book will be published. The remaining Cds and the book will hopefully be completed by 2009. For more information on the Flora Malesiana project "Orchids of New Guinea" please visit this site: http://www.nationaalherbarium.nl/pubs/orchidweb/Malesian%20orchid%20genera.htm Enjoy! Quite a few of the species collected last year in the Highlands have flowered in the meantime and Dr. Ed de Vogel has generously given me some 1,500 images of these species. I will update my image library at http://gallery.orchidspng.com over the next few weeks with many of them. Enjoy, Wolfgang (Message edited by webmaster on September 26, 2004) |

Vol. III of Orchids of New Guinea is now scheduled to be released at the end of 2004. This is again a 'tentative' date as funding is still a huge problem. It also seems that the ETI engine on which these CDs are based is not without it's own problems. Therefore we are 'toying' with the idea of creating an online version of the CDs, pay per view or subscribe on a monthly basis. The choice of purchasing a CD will still be offered but that CD will also be based on a browser driven interface. Presently I am are testing suitable software based on PHP and MySQL. The final outcome is intended to be similar to my PNG Orchid News Image Gallery but with extensive areas for text, keys, descriptions etc. I will keep you posted. Cheers, Wolfgang |

No, that is one thing I forgot to ask him about. I hope they update the ETI software to include Win XP support. Cheers...Steve |

Ed attended the Australasian Native Orchid Conference in Sydney this week and he presented his Orchids of New Guinea CDs Vol 1 and 2. He informed the delegates that Vol 3 will be published either late this year or early next. The remaining 3 CDs should appear towards the end of 2005 Cheers...Steve |

I was communicating with Dr. Ed deVogel and also Dr. Bill Hominicks about this almost a year ago. Bill represents ETI (the software makers) while Ed represents the NHN (National Herbarium of Netherlands) which provides the subject matter - in fact he is co-author of the CDs. While I found Bill was very helpful and keen to market the product, it turned out that if one dealt directly with ETI, he or she would be undercutting the NHN who had several hundred copies for their own distribution. Buying from other sources would mean loss of profits for the NHN and jeopardise funding for future research. I hope Ed is reading this: the Flora Malesiana volumes on Orchids of PNG are among my favourite orchid resources but I think the marketing needs to be handled better to ensure their future success. This could include discount offers for multiple purchases eg buying both Vol I and II together or buying x copies of each volume. Maybe a subscription based online service like http://www.bibliorchidea.net for those who want to access the info ad hoc. Maybe get advice from the software distributors. CD based references, while not as easily accessed as a book, are more environmentally friendly and more a more powerful research tool. (Message edited by stephen on August 25, 2003) |

Peter, I have passed your message on. Regrettably I have to concur with you as far as their 'as they never answer' comment is concerned. |

I find it a waste of time contacting zoelen@nhn.leidenuniv.nl as they never answer. This has happened on several occassions and I end up having to phone them. I am not buying the vol 1 Philipinnes CD ROM as it will not work on my XP. vol 3 PNG Orchids is being developed to work on XP. This is why it is taking so long to produce.

I have received this email from the ETI-Biodiversity Center: Quote: Dear Wolfgang Bandisch, apologies for the slight delay, I had a long weekend off. ETI regrets a customer is experiencing problems with the Orchids cd-rom, I have read about it on your forum. My personal advice to anyone experiencing problems is to contact ETI as well, as we can provide direct support. The support email address is printed in the cd booklet and mentioned in the "read me" on the cd-rom itself. If ETI remains unaware of a problem, it will never be solved! In the case of mr. Fowler, I will contact him for more details. Then over to the problem. The software used for this cd, Linnaeus II, was originally designed for Windows 98/Me. Many users are running the software on Windows XP without problems, but due to the many flavours of this operating systems, some have reported problems with XP. Linnaeus software does not support "networking" systems such as Windows NT and 2000, which may cause problems with limitations in user privileges. Currently ETI is beta-testing a version of Linnaeus II that is fully XP compatible. Until this is available, users of Windows XP should contact ETI if they report a problem. In case a problem is unsolvable for a particular XP setup (so far this has yet not happened!), ETI will refund the client. A couple of users have experienced problems mounting ETI cds. To protect the work of the authors, until recently ETI implemented a third party copy-protection method that prevented a cd from being duplicated. Unfortunately, a few DVD and CD-RW writers appeared to be incompatible with this protection method. Therefore, ETI has switched to a serial number scheme for its recent releases. Users experiencing problems can send their disc to ETI and ETI will return a customized, "unprotected" product. Best regards, Ruud Altenburg ETI support Unquote |

The Flora Malesiana CD run on software provided by the ETI-Biodiversity Center, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Their web site is http://www.eti.uva.nl I have written to them at support@eti.uva.nl and asked to respond either to me or, better, directly to this board. Dr. Ed de Vogel is one of the AUTHORS of the Flora Malesiana CD series, NOT the creator of the software. |

Peter The CDs don't support running on Win 2K or XP,. The first CD often crashed when running on Win 2K When I installed the 2nd on Win XP, I ran it in Windows compatibility mode. I can't remember off the top of my head but it's something along the lines of right clicking on the installation file and choosing properties. One of the Properties tabs has options for compatibility mode. Once installed, I enable Windows 98 compatibility for the program itself by right clicking on the Program icon in Startup menu. As I'm typing this at work (shhh!) I am trying to recall from memory what I did. I reported this on the OGD last year but someone else reported that they were able to run the CD on Win XP without any problems. Cheers...Steve |

I have Flora Malesiana CD's 1 & 2. I used Windows 98 SE when I first loaded them on my old computer. I purchased a new computer 6 months ago with Windows XP Home edtn. I am having problems with some of the links on the CD's. Same problem with both volumes. It jumps out and I have to load again, and then sometimes it says I have a copy loaded already; but I have'nt. I sent an email to Netherlands Dr. Vogel? but never got a reply. Do other people have similar problems with XP Home and the two CD's? Will CD 3 work OK with all OS's. Peter Fowler Alton UK |
